Here's how to open up your MP-975 or MP-983 series laptop.
![]() This is the rear panel (LCM cover in Chicony terms - liquid crystal module?) that needs to come off to be able to install memory or to begin to disassemble a MP-975 or MP-983 laptop. Grasp the ends of the panel, to the left and right of the hinges, and pull straight up. Several "ears" will release and the panel will come off. Be careful or you can break off the "ears" off when lifting or replacing this panel.
![]() This is what is under the rear panel. Round "silver" object is the laptop "beep" speaker. Small square cutout in the metal shield to the right holds the LCD shutoff switch. This switch removes power to the backlight when the LCD lid is closed. The square switch to the far right is the on/off switch which is located directly under the plastic on/off button on the rear panel. The keyboard is held in place by a single screw, except Inteva machines which will have three screws. For single screw machine the screw is just above the "PrtSc - SysRq" key.
![]() After removing the screw(s) you can lift the rear of the keyboard up. The front side of the keyboard is held in place by several small ears on the keyboard that slide into cutouts in the main case. Lifting the keyboard up and out reveals the two ribbon cable from the keyboard to the laptop's on/off power board and also exposes the metal shield over the LCD signal cable. Some machines may not have the shield or may have a copper-colored shield.
If you remove the two screws in the metal shield you can begin to disassemble the laptop for repairs or to replace a broken case. (However this is not required to install memory)
BIOS Chip & CMOS Backup Battery
![]() This is the memory slots for the MP-983. (TravelPro 2500 series) Note the BIOS chip is the blue square object above the metal shield and between the two connectors for the keyboard ribbon cables. (keyboard removed in this picture)
The round object to the right of the BIOS chip is the CMOS backup battery. These machines use a rechargeable Li battery for CMOS backup and it doesn't need to be replaced unless it won't hold a charge.

CHIP Cable Cables
The (MP-975 A or D (TravelPro 100, 1950 & 2000 series) memory slots are in the same location - however, these earlier models use a slightly different type of memory module. Memory installation is nearly the same for all models.
The BIOS chips for MP975's is located in the lower left corner of the large metal shield that's under the keyboard. The CMOS backup battery is located in almost the same location as in the MP-983 (TP 2500 series) and can't be seen in this picture.
