G799 & G720

Green 710, Green 720 and Green 799
Including WinBook J1 (G720)

Beneath the plastic case, the Green 710, Green 720 and the Green 799 are nearly the same laptop. They share most components except for their keyboards, individual case pieces or LCD's.

Common Features

I believe that the important internal parts, such as motherboard and drive modules are are all the same in both the Green 710, Green 720 (also WinBook J1) and Green 799.  Other than the keyboard and case plastic parts  most parts should exchange and most are still available from ECS. (See our parts page)

The CMOS backup battery is a plug-in battery that requires taking the laptop completely apart to replace. It is also a pain to pull the connector to clear CMOS data or passwords.

Green 710/720 Features

The Green 710 and Green 720 appear to differ only in outer plastic case design - an attempt to supply various OEM's with non-look-alike laptops. Most Green 720's that were sold in the USA will be labeled as WinBook J1 laptops. So we will refer to both models as J1's, in general.

The The Green 720 has a 14.1" TFT LCD mounted into a metal main lid, but does have a plastic front LCD bezel. The metal lid seems to reduce broken hinge failures to nearly zero and so it is a good design.

The only broken LCD that I had to replace was a hard to find Acer LCD. I have found some very close to exact replacements, but they all require some modifications to the LCD mounting rails. (Plus changes to their backlight cables) I don't know if all G710's and all G720's use the same LCD.

Green 799 Features

The Green 799 has a smaller 13.3" LCD and has a smaller footprint case design than the 14.1" Green 710/720.

The only Green 799 that I own is from the Taiwanese reseller (Leo) and was sold as their Designote 3830. It has a dual Chinese and English character keyboard and USA keycap keyboards are not available at this time. The keyboard for the Green 799 is smaller (to fit the smaller case) than the Green 720's keyboard and since it is not available, do take good care of your present keyboard.

The Green 720 keyboard won't replace the Green 799 keyboard (or reverse) - so please don't try this swap.

An interesting thing happened when I attempted to load the "default" BIOS settings into the LEO's CMOS setup for the first time  - the Leo Designote 3830 started to report itself as being a WinBook J1. I guess the BIOS defaults to WinBook J1 if the hard drive isn't present to supply boot information for the POST screen.

Below is some information regarding the Green 799 found on a reseller's webpage:
