MP983 Switch Settings

Use this information at your own risk!

We do not believe that any modifications should be taken lightly and while we believe that this information is accurate, it is provided on a use at your own risk basis. Plus reflashing of a BIOS can lead to a dead laptop.

Static electricity does damage electronic components and good anti-static procedures must be used at any time that a laptop is undergoing repair or update.

Always firmly close the CPU socket after replacing a CPU by pushing the socket closed until there's no gap ( I mean zero!) on the open side!

Motherboard Dip Switch Settings

The motherboard revision number is silk screened on the motherboard under the right side memory module. This revison may also be determined by the third digit from the left in the Chicony bar code serial number that's glued to the motherboard. (This is not the laptop brand's S/N)However, this second method can be misleading to someone has switched S/N's.

Settings for Motherboard 001-983-B revisions only

I believe that all or some of these motherboards have the NeoMagic 128ZV+ video chip machines and this motherboard also will have the large video adaptor board connector that is shared only with Rev. "A" motherboards. I believe that all of these Rev "A" or Rev "B" machines will also have the Panasonic 13.3" LCD.

Note: I've not been able to determine what each switch setting does. If anyone has a complete SW1 function chart for this rev. "B" motherboard please e-mail me

Settings for Motherboards 001-983-
Rev. "A", "C", "D" (?) and "E"xx only

Note that a Rev. "A" is not interchangeable with other revision motherboard other than the above Rev. "B" due to the size of the video adaptor connector.

Note: Based upon the only example of MP983 motherboard Rev C that I have seen, the Rev. C motherboard does not support any AMD CPU.  I this it true then the Rev C is limited to using an Intel 233mmx or slower CPU.

Same Sw1 settings as Rev A, C, D and E
However the core voltage setting chart is as below

These motherboards will still have the voltage chart located in the hard drive area. There may also be a second label stating that a 266 MHz CPU is okay to install (1.9 V for Intel laptop 266mmx CPU) in which case there will be a tiny switch on the top side of the motherboard near the back edge of the hole for the CPU. This switch needs to be switched for a 1.9 V CPU. Do not mess with this switch for any other reason. Plus you must then set the rotary core voltage switch to 3.3V, I believe.
