MP996

This must be a very rare laptop, I've never seen one. The MP996 does appear to be the same basic design as the MP993 with the exception of the CPU socket. I believe that Chicony didn't know which way Intel was going with future CPU designs and produced two versions of basicly the same laptop. Many laptop manufacturers did the same thing in this time period.

Most parts (except for the motherboard), but including the drive modules, AC adapter and battery sold for the MP993 should also work in the MP996.

Chicony's MP996

MP996 is a rock solid design, with two swappable SmartBays. It features Intel high performance Pentium II processor with speeds up to 400MHz, the CPU is easily changed via the uPGA-1 socket. Although the case is very slim (42mm) it still houses both a FDD-bay (FDD/LS-120/ZIP) and a CD-ROM bay (CD/DVD) simultaneously. Other great feature are very long battery life and TV-out connector.

CPU:

The easy to change CPU supports all Intel Pentium II processors on an uPGA-1 socket. Currently the fastest available processor is the 400MHz. The Intel Pentium II have 256kb embedded L2 cache.

FDD-bay:

Tired of the FDD's low capacity? Agree that 1.44MB isn't quite enough? MP996 have solutions! You can easily change the FDD to a ZIP drive (100MB) or a LS-120 (120MB), this can easily be done by the end-user.

CD-bay:

The 24x CD-ROM is also just like the FDD easy to exchange to a higher speed drive or a DVD-ROM for those great quality movies.

HDD:

Do you mind when your kids install games on your HDD? Buy them another HDD, it's easy changed in the MP996. You can also have different HDDs for different purposes, also it's never been easier to upgrade.

Docking and Port Replicator:

High-end docking with two standard 5.25" desktop bays, all ports are replicated and there is one PCI slot as well
